Friday morning I got up with Bill and he took me over to the nearest Social Security office to apply for a Social Security Number and card. The office was located within a shopping mall complex which I thought was very strange. Just like at the deli counter we had to take a service number from the dispenser when we got there, then sit and wait. I think we got there pretty soon after it opened and the room was fairly full already. Our ticket said that we were already the 27th customer of the day.
I filled in the appropriate form and fished out my ID documents (passport, full driver’s licence and birth certificate) while we waited for our number to be called. Didn’t take too long at all actually. Much better than anticipated.
Once called to a counter I handed over my form and prepared to have to fight and argue to get my SSN. A lot of people have reported finding it difficult to get issued one while on a K1 visa despite being entitled to it you see. However all went surprisingly smoothly and the lady processed my application and gave me the receipt to prove it. I should get my card in around 2 weeks.
Apparently I still can’t work as I don’t have the authorisation stamp I need (they’ve stopped issuing these at airports now, dammit) but I’ll be needing it when I apply for my driver’s test. *shudders*
