Saturday morning found Bill and I playing Paintball against Delta for the Brighthouse team. Oh what fun! Although I was very nervous and apprehensive about actually playing it, I’ve always wanted to have a go.
Brighthouse provided some camo t-shirts with their logo on it and seeing as we needed something suitable to roll around in anyway Bill and I headed over to Charlie’s Trading Post and kitted ourselves out with combats too. Never thought we’d have matching clothes, and certainly never dreamt it’d be camo!
Here’s me trying on my gear for size the night before, I’m afraid Quince was rations:
The paintball field is up past Alpharetta so we stayed overnight at Mary and Hank’s and took Quince with us so he could have a fun day with their dogs too. Had to be at the field by 8.30 am so we got up early and piled into our kit. Wore lots of thin layers for padding and made sure everything was covered. I’d even attacked an old black t-shirt to make throat and neck protectors for us both. Made a bit of a blunder the other day when I woke up feeling dowdy, decided to dye my hair bright pink and then remembered I was supposed to be hard to spot in undergrowth when it was too late. Ooops. Did my best to tie it all out of the way and Bill lent me a camoflage baseball hat to wear too.
We jumped into the truck feeling very much the part and headed off to war. Was very much amused when the directions took us off proper roads and down a steep dirt track. Definitely one of those times when the truck did good.
Signed a release form and collected our headgear, ammo and marker, and then battles commenced.
The first game we played was in a field with plenty of bushes and bunkers. We had to capture the flag from where it was garrisoned in the middle of the action, secure the enemy base and display the flag over there. Was great fun. Played this one a few times and tried to partner Bill and cover him until he got shot. In the first game we were doing really well until Bill got taken out and I was left bunkered down to the right of the flag. I was trying to pick off the opposition from my vantage point, gun thrust through the brushes when I came under attack. I could see my camo get sprayed with paint and the enemy was relentlessly fireing. Was thus rather annoyed with myself when I called myself “hit” and came out of the game only to find that I hadn’t actually been shot at all and it was just paint splatters from where the pellets had exploded against the bush, not me. Darn it!
Bill, ready for action
Another time Brighthouse won and along with Bill I was still on the field at the time of victory. Hoorah!
Me, feeling like a lemon
Was a bit weird only really knowing Bill. I need to be more outgoing though. Never really felt part of any team communication and just ended up tagging along trying my best to cover other people’s backs most of the time.
Really enjoyed the game we played in the big field. Each team had a flag in their camp and we had to capture the enemy flag and get it home to our own base, without losing our own. Everyone was in the game at once on this one and if you got hit you just had to stand out for 5 mins before respawning. Saying that though I only got hit once right near the end so I was pretty much involved in the action for the full duration, which is probably why I am so sore now. This was great fun and the camo worked a treat here. I’d just dart from tree to tree and squirm into position, or hunker down behind a bush or bunker and pick people off. Managed to take several people by surprise that way.
Disaster only came when my gun jammed and I came under attack. I picked myself up and ran for a safer spot where I could sort myself out and in my haste did a repeat of my Taekwan Do fall. Went tits over arse, gun went flying and broke into pieces, ammo scattered all over the floor and I landed in a sprawled heap. Thankfully I was still in one piece this time though, no collarbones broken and paintball shots evaded. After that I was somewhat more cautious, possibly too much so. Just always had at the back of my mind that I’m not on health insurance yet and I didn’t want to end up in Casualty! Got very frustrated with myself after that and sat a few games out. (Several of the games only a certain number of each team were allowed to play anyway so I didn’t exactly wuss, just ended up not playing every game)
The rest of the games were set in less leafy areas. They were mainly clear fields with various structures erected on them to use as cover. Didn’t enjoy these ones so much as the objective for these was last man standing. It was just pure elimination and the odds were that you were going to get shot at close range. Aggravated myself once more here by calling myself out incorrectly again. I definitely felt the hit so got out of the game, only to find that the pellet had bounced off without breaking. Dammit dammit dammit. Very annoying.
For the last game neither Bill or I had enough ammo for a full game so I sacrificed my rounds to him so that at least one of us had the chance to play a full game. This proved highly successful and well worth while as he did me proud and got a final kill, with style as well. Go Bill! That was superb to watch. Though after crouching, sneaking and ducking and diving his way to victory he came off the battlefield looking somewhat the worse for wear.
Actually, we both did. Cripes, I only actually got hit once and that barely hurt at all. It’s the continual crouching and diving into the ground that hurts like hell and I’m suffering for it now. Hope we get the chance to play again sometime though!
