Happy Valentine's Day

So, did we make the most of our last Valentine’s Day as a couple and spend a nice romantic night out together? Uhm…no. Instead, we spent the evening in the plumbing section of Lowes and then Bill’s head remained underneath the sink for the rest of the night.

As a result, almost two weeks since the start of our project, we finally got water running in the kitchen again. Hoorah! We now have the washing machine back in place and churning through our mountain of dirty clothing, a hooked up dishwasher and running water in the sink.

Our crockery must be particularly happy about the dishwasher because while we were without I’d bought a washing up bowl and had been attempting to wash the dishes in the bath. I think every time I washed up I managed to drop and break something, there was certainly a severe culling of our glassware.

As you can see the cabinets are now being assembled and put into place one by one. The dishwasher one is especially exciting (yikes, am I really getting excited about a kitchen cabinet?!!) as it lifts the machine off the ground and places it at a nice height for loading and unloading.

Unfortunately we’ve run into a slight problem with our plans for the rolling drawers that are supposed to go beneath the cabinets and provide extra storage. With the plumbing for the sink and dishwasher back there the drawers won’t actually fit. Agh! You see, instead of coming neatly out of the wall the pipes had to be threaded through and along the back of the cabinets via some nasty holes Bill had to drill through the cupboard walls. Rats. We’re still trying to think of a solution to this and are wondering if the drawers can be adapted and made shorter easily or not.

Another slight disaster hit when Bill constructed the sink unit. In true Ikea fashion one of the parts to a drawer is missing. It has no back. I think we’ll be going back to Ikea with this one but I don’t hold up much hope for an easy fix because the range is now discontinued and not in stock. I wish we’d been able to construct and check all the parts earlier while Ikea still had some units left, but that wasn’t really a possibility. Crap!

Other than that, so far so good:

We’re still without a cooker, but we went looking for one after class yesterday and found a model at Lowes that wasn’t too bad and we’re mulling over. Hopefully I’ll be able to bake brownies again soon because I’m chomping at the bit for a batch! Eating out is getting quite tiresome and it would be nice to be able to fix stuff ourselves again. (Saying that, I wouldn’t say no to a belated Valentine’s Day meal…hint hint)
