Sam’s umbilical cord finally dropped off on Tuesday evening. We were both so relieved. It had been hanging on by a really grim looking thread for days and days and disturbing us.
Once that was gone Sam could have proper bathtime. Until now we’d been advised to just give him sponge baths so that the shriveled cord stump wouldn’t get wet. Sam hated those so much, and I can’t say I blame him. Despite our best efforts at making it comfortable for him he’d get cold so quickly and would spend the entire time telling us very vocally how unhappy he was.

The poor boy is also experiencing a touch of nasty nappy rash so once he was clean we put him back in the dry bath tub all wrapped up in some cosy towels to give him some bare bottom time. He just looked so cute wrapped up in his Tigger towel we couldn’t resist the photo opportunity.
Sam’s not really interested in toys at the moment but that doesn’t stop us from trying to stimulate him. He did seem to focus on green froggy this evening and reached out to grab him, but that was as far as he got before he wriggled, made a little pouty face and fell back to sleep again.
Of course, now that the cord has dropped I’ve been able to try out those cloth nappies I bought. They are supposed to be better for a baby’s bottom than disposable ones. So far I like them very much, we’ve had no leaks, they wash up easily and well and Sam’s bottom does seem to benefit. I really can’t believe I’m getting excited about nappies, but I think I will probably order some more as I only got three to trial them.
