I was very excited yesterday. A very lovely person bought us (well, me…Bill’s not exactly going to use it!) the breastpump I wanted. Phew! Bill had gone to the store to get it for me when I was so engorged the other day but they didn’t have it in stock. As a result I’d been trying to hand express milk to relieve some of the pressure, and not doing too well at that. My boobs have been very swollen and sore and milk has been going everywhere.
Hehe, I woke up to feed Sam the other night, removed the breast pad and was very startled when milk immediately started spurting out of me in a long stream. I was like a fountain! I think the stream was making it at least a metre across the room! Both Sam and I got covered in milk as I desperately tried to get him to latch on to plug the eruption. This was particularly hard to do when I couldn’t stop giggling.
Anyway, I fired up the pump yesterday though (it’s just a manual one) and was amazed when I managed to pump 2 fl oz from one boob at the first attempt. Crikey! It’s pretty impressive to see in action too. When feeding Sam it’s hard to tell what is going on or how much milk he must be getting, the breastpump certainly opened my eyes. Sometimes Sam falls asleep after one breast and refuses to be roused again, the breastpump is going to be a fabulous aid to stop me walking in circles when that happens.
We’re going to give it a little while to make sure that Sam doesn’t get nipple confusion, but soon I’ll be able to hand him over to Bill for some feedings. I think Bill is quite excited about that and is looking forward to being able to feed him occasionally too. Thanks Ashley!
Okay, speaking of feeding…must go!
