While Mum and Dad were with us we went to Kinko’s and Sam had his picture taken for his first passport(s). This was interesting as we were initially told that they don’t do photos of babies for passports, but when we asked “where on earth do we get baby passport photos then?” they suddenly changed their minds and could do it after all.
Poor Sam was not impressed by having his picture taken at all. I had to hold him up against a white wall and he wriggled and wriggled and cried and had to be calmed down a bit before the lady managed to get a decent picture.
With pics, birth certificate and completed forms in hand I met Bill for lunch today and we walked over to the nearest post office to apply for Sam’s US passport. The little chap had to appear in person, and both mum and dad had to be there to prove he wasn’t going to leave the country without either of our permissions. It was quite silly when we even had to raise our right hands and swear an oath. Part of the oath involved declaring that you are a US citizen or US national, and I am neither. I pointed this out and the lady made me read it anyway. What a joke. What’s the point of being all solemn and swearing an oath if you are encouraged to state falsehoods? Silliness.
We paid the extra cash to get little Sam’s passport expedited and it should be here within a fortnight. Then, we’ll be able to book those tickets to fly! Hoorah!
Of course, that’s just the toy passport, I still have to apply for his proper one. I’ll be asking my OB GYN to sign the back of his photos and sending off for his British passport on Thursday. *ducks quickly to avoid being hit by Bill and the US government*
Can’t wait to book those tickets…if all goes well we’ll be having a family reunion in August and getting to see Aunty Mel and Uncle Sy too! *squeal!*
