Sam’s been really poring over his animal themed books lately and seemingly beginning to recognise different ones. The picture book Mum and Dad gave him on their first visit has had a new lease of life with the aid of a roll of sellotape and is now one of his favourites once more. Sam is especially enthralled with the panda and elephant pictures and will actually point to them when asked where they are. He’s also really loving all the animals painted onto his nursery walls and will go hug and stroke them. This is quite sad as I think they are only going to be his friends for another two months as the house is under contract and we’ll be moving in either August or September. *sniff* Leaving his fabulous nursery behind is going to be a real wrench.
Anyway, as I was saying, Sam really loves his animal books so I packed up some of them and with Sam in tow we went to the zoo again today. We met Alyssa and Lucas there and had a grand time visiting all the animals. As we said hello to each of our friends we read an appropriate page, played peekaboo animals, and looked at the pictures in Sam’s books. Sam really seemed to make the connection between the image, the real thing, and (in the case of the elephant) me stomping around rolling my arm around in front of my face.
The last and possibly most exciting port of call was the petting zoo. Just as I begin to get anxious that he isn’t doing something compared to his friends he does something that makes me just gasp (he’s wonderful with his motor skills but compared to his copius little girlfriends he doesn’t seem too interested in being vocally communicative, and I’m his mum so of course I’m analysing his every move!). Here, Sam totally amazed me by saying “goat!”, picking up one of the blue plastic brushes, finding himself an amicable goat and gently grooming him. No prompting from me was involved. It was like he just knew what he was doing. He loves the goats. The little kune kune piggies and sheep were pretty good too.
Sadly I didn’t have my camera with me today, so this is a photo from when we visited the petting zoo last month.
